Recycling cereal boxes into works of art, Challenge Time

The last few terms have proved to be very challenging for the children in 1G. Twice a week we attempt the impossible; to turn discarded cereal boxes into mountain retreats for eagles; picturesqe villages complete with thatched roofs; a dinosaur's bone, or even a lunar landscape with a rocket ship newly landed. We also make a huge mess which we are becoming increasingly adept at clearing up quickly!

"Challenge Time" provides an opportunity for every one to choose a creative activity which appeals to their imagination. Sometimes we discuss our ideas with like minded partners, and one suggestion usually sparks off several more. Then some children might like to draw a plan of how to proceed; but mostly we jump straight in, wielding our newly proficient scissors. Sticky tape is unravelled by the yard and large dollops of glue have been known to fly through the air. But eventually something emerges that the builders can feel proud of (even if the title is adjusted a little to suit the new creation). Gradually we are becoming more aware of which techniques are likely to work; we know, because we have tried three or four other ways of doing it! But most significantly, everyone has the chance to rise to the challenge of a new idea; to become absorbed in the task, and to experience the ultimate human satisfaction of brain working in conjuction with the body. Children who have struggled with handwriting and spellings are now free to experiment independently, and to use their thinking and reasoning skills, accepting responsibility for their own learning. It has been a steep curve for some of us, particularly Mrs Green, ever mindful of what might be permanently ground into the carpet! The advantages are becoming clear, as the class forge new relationships while developing abilities they didn't realize they had. New leaders emerge, and a new pride in achievement is experienced; best of all we are united in having fun!
