Art and Design Technology

Our curriculum is at the heart of our school and is carefully designed to support the learning journey of the whole child and enable them to achieve success.

We want no day to be ordinary and strive to put the creativity into each and every day.

Throughout their time in Nursery the children are encouraged to freely explore different materials in order to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to make. They explore colour mixing and joining materials and textures. In the EYFS, Art and Design is split into two areas ‘Creating with materials’ and ‘Being imaginative and expressive’. In Reception children begin to represent their feelings and refine their ideas based on previous experiences.

In Key Stage 1 and 2 Art lessons are supported by the Art Scheme Plan Bee. This promotes technical skills and acquisition of knowledge by introducing famous artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Leonardo Da Vinci and Andy Warhol.

During art sessions, children have the opportunity to observe, discuss and create, there is also time for them to evaluate their own and other pupils’ work.  Where possible, lessons are structured around the children’s half-termly IPC topic and reflect and build upon what they are learning in their other lessons. Children create individually, in partners and collaboratively and they sculpt, collage, draw - using a wide range of media - or paint with poster paints, watercolours, acrylics, fabric paints and coloured pastels.

The children each have their own sketchbook (YR1-Y6) and there is a class book which documents all of the Art/DT taught over the year. High quality classroom displays demonstrate the children’s creativity and passion for Art.
